At Sunset Malibu, treating co-occurring disorders is our focus. It’s what we’re good at. We know howaddiction can be tightly interwoven with other personal battles and/or dependencies. We also know that these issues cannot be approached in isolation from each other. The combination of stimulant addictionand sexual disorders is becoming more common.
Recently we’ve seen more and more how men who abuse stimulant drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamines are often also struggling to curb unhealthy sexual behaviors. It is impossible to overstate the dangers of this particular combination. According to a recent study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “Stimulant-induced enhancement of sexual desire could be one mechanism by which stimulant drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine increase the risk for HIV transmission even when they are not injected.” HIV transmission is just one of the often deadly outcomes of this dual diagnosis. Unfortunately, the men who abuse drugs and engage in risky sexual behaviors are stigmatized beyond what people who suffer from other addictions routinely face.
Our clinicians approach stimulant addiction and sexual disorders from a completely unique standpoint and offer a unprecedented level of compassion in both therapy and aftercare. Beginning with a clinical assessment and diagnostic evaluation by Sunset Malibu’s team of experts (including therapists, psychiatrists, complementary health practitioners and others), our clients receive an individualized combination of therapies that may include: one-on-one psychotherapy, marriage and family therapy, brain mapping, and experiential therapies including hypnotherapy, acupuncture, equine therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, hypnotherapy, neurofeedback and more. It is this combination of therapies provided in a supportive, judgment free setting that allows those with addiction and other disorders to recover.
